Public beta introduces a lightweight, AI-friendly alternative to server-based CMS platforms for smaller websites

WebHaste has launched a free, local-first Content Management System (CMS) in public beta, targeting website owners and teams looking for an alternative to server-side platforms such as WordPress.

The platform is designed to let users manage websites locally as portable files before deploying finished sites to content delivery networks (CDNs). The approach aims to reduce common maintenance tasks associated with server-based websites, including plugin updates, SSL management, caching, and security administration.

Local Website Management

WebHaste operates as a Chrome extension that combines file management, visual WYSIWYG editing, real-time previews, template rendering, and deployment tools.

Instead of relying on a database-driven CMS, websites remain as files controlled by the user on a local device or network. This allows sites to be managed, transferred, or handed off without maintaining a dedicated server-side application.

James Little, owner and lead developer at Destination Toolbox, said the platform is intended for teams that do not require the complexity of a database-driven CMS.

CDN-Based Hosting and SEO

The platform includes deployment pipelines for free CDN-enabled hosting through Cloudflare Pages and Netlify, while users can also export their websites for deployment with other hosting providers.

WebHaste includes built-in SEO features such as automatic sitemaps, per-page meta descriptions, OpenGraph tags, and other search optimization capabilities.

The static-site approach is also designed to provide faster delivery and reduce the attack surface associated with server-side CMS installations.

Designed for Agencies and AI Workflows

WebHaste includes features aimed at agencies managing multiple client websites. Sites can be stored and shared through shared drives or Git-based workflows, while the platform supports client handoffs and per-page tracking pixels.

The CMS is also designed to work with file-aware AI development tools, including Claude Code and Codex. AI agents can build templates, modify files, and manage website content, while publishing remains under human control.

Targeting Smaller Websites

WebHaste is primarily aimed at websites with relatively simple content and publishing requirements. Potential use cases include:

  • Informational websites with fewer than 100 pages
  • Infrequently updated blogs
  • Campaign landing pages
  • Personal websites and portfolios
  • Websites requiring AI-assisted content workflows
  • Sites using third-party embeds or client-side scripts for forms and email subscriptions
