Google’s AI-powered search is increasingly relying on social media platforms such as Facebook, Instagram, TikTok, Reddit, and YouTube to generate AI Overviews, according to new research from BrightEdge. Analyzing approximately 300 million monthly searches, the study found that Facebook appeared in 19.5 million AI Overviews, while Instagram was referenced 877,000 times, highlighting Meta platforms as major sources of AI-generated search responses.
The research shows that Google AI is evolving beyond traditional search by using community discussions, creator content, videos, and social posts to answer user queries. Facebook is primarily used for timely information such as local events, promotions, sports updates, and community news, while Instagram is more frequently cited for lifestyle, entertainment, food, travel, shopping, and cultural topics.
BrightEdge also found that Google AI assigns different roles to social platforms based on content type, treating Facebook as a source for local and community insights, Instagram for culture and lifestyle, TikTok for viral trends, Reddit for firsthand experiences, and YouTube for instructional content. The findings suggest that brands should expand their SEO strategies to include stronger social media engagement, as AI search increasingly relies on trusted digital conversations beyond company websites.
